The NCSC-FI warns that a hacker can exploit a vulnerable home router and turn it into a weapon – for example, as part of a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack.
A router directs network traffic and usually provides a firewall that blocks direct connection requests from outside the home network. In other words, the router functions like a locked door to your home, helping to prevent intrusions, malware infections, and unauthorized login attempts.
A compromised router can be used to disguise the attacker’s identity. In such cases, a hacker gains direct access to the router, allowing malicious traffic to be routed through it toward the target country. Denial-of-Service attacks often rely on large numbers of hijacked routers. Unprotected routers can also be used to conceal cybercrime or espionage activities.
By securing your own devices, you not only protect yourself but also contribute to improving the overall cybersecurity of society.
